Creative Music Workshop is a program where the ensemble is the classroom and improvisation is more than a style; it is a path for learning. The Creative Music Workshop summer intensive gathers renowned musicians from across North America. It takes place during the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, and thus provides students many opportunities to see numerous world class artists and to perform on the festival tent stage.

This year at the Creative Music Workshop…

Core Program
July 7-16

Musicians of all skill levels, aged 15 or older are provided with an opportunity to take their playing to the next level. This stream follows the same model as the Creative Process, but includes dedicated instruction, additional rehearsal time and the opportunity to compose for and play in the TD Halifax Jazz Festival.

Times: Thursday 7th and Friday 8th 5:30pm-8:30pm, Saturday 9th to Friday 15th 9:00am-4:00pm and Saturday 16th is performance day.

This program is best suited for musicians who want plenty of practical experiences in their education and who are interested in dedicated instruction from leading international musicians and educators, such as Jerry Granelli (drums), David Tronzo (guitar), Jay Clayton (voice), J. Anthony Granelli (electric bass), Simon Fisk (acoustic bass) and Dani Oore (saxophone).

BONUS! Core program students have access to: all of the CMW clinics, including student-only sessions with internationally renowned bassist Anthony Cox and local improvisatory hero, pianist Tim Crofts; AND an All Events Pass ($250) to the TD Halifax Jazz Festival.

Creative Process
July 9-15

Creative minds of all disciplines learn the fundamental principles of the Creative Music Workshop through a wide ranges of exercises, including listening, improvising, playing in ensembles and movement.

Times: 9:00am-12:00pm This program was created for all artistic disciplines, such as music, dance, drama, tactile and visual arts.

The sessions pass on knowledge not only about what it means to be a musician, dancer, etc., but what it means to be a creative thinker.
